Miniature Scottish Highland Cows

Taylor & Bella

Thank you for visiting us!

We think you will agree we have a lovely home overlooking the Pacific with lots of grass to munch on.

But we don’t just eat all day – even though we love to do so! Some of our favorite pastimes include jogging through the meadow – although it is usually because the dog is chasing us!

We are sisters and most people agree we are real lookers. We sing too – usually at night when people are trying to sleep.

Bella: “My favorite is ‘Cows With Guns’ by Dana Lyons. He must have been Some kind of cow!”

Taylor: “I enjoy Old McDonald Had a Farm, because cows get such favorable mention!”

We have Lots of friends, including chickens, egrets, many types of birds and cats.

And did we mention the dog? We hate the dog! What a pest!

We aspire to be Momma cows and look forward to the arrival of Mr. Bull.

And more about us!

Bella –  I’m the brunette

Taylor – I am the redhead, although some call me Ginger

We were born April, 2017 in Sacramento, CA

We are 4’ tall

At birth we each weighed less than 70#, but currently we weigh more than 1000#

Our horns are now 18” which is helpful for scratching our itch.

Us Cows appreciate the public recognition of our Bovine Beauty! We're now featured in Carmel Magazine!

Facts About

Miniature Scottish Highland Cows

  • Records also show that Highland is actually the oldest registered breed in the world, mostly due to the fact that their herd book predates all others.
  • A group of Highland cattle is called a ‘fold’, rather that a herd.
  • Their coat is often the most discussed attribute of these cattle. When Highland cattle are mentioned, people often immediately think of their ginger-red coat. However, their coloring can vary between black, brindle, yellow and even white!
  • Their hair is always long, sometimes reaching about 13 inches, with a slight wave. Since their coat is double-layered, the outer hair is oiled to prevent rain seeping into their skin, while the downy undercoat provides warmth during the rough and rainy Scottish winters.
  • They have long and distinctive horns, which actually help them forage for food during during snowy winters! They can use their horns as a way to dig deep into pastures that have been covered with snow. Although this is a benefit to the cattle, some farmers may find horns to be troublesome, especially if the cattle are kept in close proximity to other animals.
  • Highland cattle have great longevity! This reduces herd replacement costs, since they’re known to live for about 20 years; a considerably longer lifespan than other beef breeds. The average number of calves per cow is 12, and some cows can still calve into their eighteenth year!
  • Highland cattle are usually able to mate at about 18 months of age, and pregnancy in Highland cows usually lasts up to 290 days. They can often calve unassisted, cutting down on veterinary costs during the birth process. This is because calves usually have slim bodies that move easily through the large Highland dam’s pelvis. Calves usually weigh no more than 66 pounds at birth.
  • Cows also have quite small teats with well-formed udders, and this combined with their milk’s high butterfat content ensures that calves are sufficiently nourished from an early age.
  • Highland cattle health is quite good! Their short legs ensure that problems are also kept to a minimum, and their long fringes protect their eyes and facial area.
  • These cattle are quite docile, but can be protective if their young are threatened. For this reason, it’s always important to take extra care around all cows and particularly bulls, regardless of breed!
  • Since they retain their body heat by having a thick coat and not by storing excess fat, their meat is quite lean. Studies show that their beef is about 38% lower in fat than other beef breeds. It’s also 4% lower in cholesterol. Highland beef is also well-marbled, with high protein and iron levels.

  • Cow Art

Our grandson recently handed in a blank piece of paper for his art homework.

    The teacher said, “What’s this?”

He replied, “A picture of my cow eating grass.”

The teacher asked, “Where’s the grass?”

He says, “The cow ate it all.”

So the teacher asks, “Ok, then where’s the cow?”

The boy wisely replied, “It left because there was no more grass.”

  • Mad Cow?

Bella and Taylor were standing in the meadow and chatting.

Bella looks at the Taylor and says “What do you think about all this talk of mad cow disease?”

Taylor replied, “Why should I care, I’m a helicopter.”

  • Cow Mechanic

A sightseer recently had his car break down right next to the cows in our meadow.  He got out and although he knew nothing about cars, started poking around under the hood.

Bella walked over to the fence, leaned over, looked at the engine and said, “I think the problem is your carburetor.”

The guy nearly jumped out of his skin, and ran up to our house and banged furiously on the door.

When we opened the door, the guy shouted “A cow just told me how to fix my car!” as he pointed towards the meadow.

We looked over to the meadow and asked, “Was it the brown cow?”

    “Yes! Yes!” said the guy.

We asked, ”Could you tell whether she had horns?”

The guy yelled, “Yes! Yes! That’s the one!”

We sighed in exasperation. “That darn fool Bella – Don’t listen to her – she doesn’t know anything about cars!”

Cow Fund

We aspire to do more than just eat grass and run away from the dog all day. We have dreams, passions & interests – we want to be some kind of cows!!

Bella: “I want to study cow-tipping. It is an idea whose time has come!”

Taylor: My aspiration is to become a cow hair-dresser – largely so I can see where I am going!

In the meantime, it costs a fortune to keep up our good looks, maintain our robust diets and show off for passersby – so we depend on kind-hearted people to donate to our Cow Fund. No amount is too small!

Your contribution here will be greatly appreciated! In recognition of your generosity, we will send you this genuine Cow Certificate!
